Singapore is a modern metropolis.
The island city-state is green and progressive, well-
organized, friendly, successful, safe and sheltered.
And as with most mega-cities with strong cultural histories,
the most exciting spaces are those in flux, those places
that stand like weeds between the sleek condominiums
and future casinos, between the glittery malls and trendy hotels.

In a dirty gray city, one may seek out those new, shiny
places. but in Singapore, the city that makes every effort to
be modern and new since that is mandatory in the global
competition of up-and-coming mega-cities, one tends to
seek out the out-of-the-ordinary, the accidental, the un-
designed, or just the unpretentious.
Those spaces that are not loudly promoting something or
itself are welcome relaxation for the eyes and the soul.

Thankfully, there are more of these places than the squeaky
clean Singapore cliché would make one believe. Old
streets still stand; memories of past progress of the last
century are waiting for redevelopment. And behind the
façade of the magnificent new architecture lie the shabby
back lanes and ugly nooks.
Outpaced places, left behind in the dash for development
but still yet intriguing in their own way.
